A leading visual storyteller with a unique sense of humour, Back’s work has been recognised at the highest level internationally. Winning an Oscar in 2010 for the darkly satiric short ‘The New Tenants’, he is just as noted for his commercial work, having worked with many of the world’s biggest brands and agencies. Named in the Gunn Report several times, his famous work includes the charming ‘Smallest Bar in the World’ for Amstel, Citroen’s brilliant ‘Dog Stretching’, the ugly duckling to ‘Swan’ tale for Audi, the smart Land Rover ‘7th Wheel’, D&AD winning short films ‘Big Bear’ and ‘Here’s to Twinkle’ for Chivas Regal, and not forgetting his legendary ‘Beep’ campaign for Viagra, the most awarded ad globally that year, which hilariously got round regulations by using the little blue pill to beep out characters talking about its effects.

Joachim began his career as a teenager, working as a runner on feature films. He soon transitioned into different technical positions, such as camera department, lighting department, and even in post-production as an assistant editor. Determined to get behind the camera himself, Joachim borrowed some equipment and began shooting his own commercials and spec projects.

Joachim has been working non-stop ever since, bringing his unique sense of humor and highly visual storytelling to campaigns for Viagra, Captain Morgan, Tostitos, Bud Light, and Miller Light, among many others. He helmed the campaign that marked Viagra's first foray into comedy, which became one of the most decorated campaigns in the industry. That year, Joachim appeared on the Gunn Report as one of the top ten most winning directors in the world. He's been given top industry honors including ANDY Awards, ADDY Awards, CLIOs, and three Cannes Lions, among many others.

Most recently, Joachim directed the short film, The New Tenants. The film won an Oscar for Best Live Action Short at the 82nd Academy Awards. It has also been an official selection at various film festivals around the world.

Joachim currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and two children.
